Farming

Farming Goals:

  1. To raise above average crops using necessary inputs.
  2. To be good stewards of the land.
  3. Improve soil quality.

Crop production practices:

Hodel Farms Inc. uses a two year soil testing program based on yield zones created by existing yield data and we fertilize accordingly.

We use a disk ripper or Blue Jet Sub-soiler to loosen the soil if there is a compaction problem.

Harvesting consists of a John Deere S660 combine, auger wagon, two semis.  We like to start harvesting when moisture is between 22 – 30 % to lessen field loses.

Spring tillage consists of one pass with a soil-finisher before corn planting.  Also, we are trying some vertical tillage and some no-till for soybeans.  For planting, we use a John Deere 1770 NT 16 row planter.

 Weed control practices:

Our goal is to have clean fields for the least cost.  We compare prices from different wholesalers and retailers and buy well before planting.  We use our own sprayer with a 1250 gallon tank and 80 foot booms.  By using our own equipment, we feel we can control weeds by having equipment to spray at optimum timing.
